THE MISTERY IN THE RED CLIFFS

Yerevan – Khor Virap – Noravank – Areni – Yerevan

Journey through the Ararat Valley. On the way, stop and visit Khor Virap Monastery (“Deep Pit”).
The tour continues through Vayots Dzor Province along one of the most picturesque gorges in Armenia – the gorge of the Gnishik River – to Noravank Monastery (12th–15th centuries), located 122 km from Yerevan.
Free time for lunch at Noravank. Upon request, a master class on preparing lavash and shashlik can be organized during lunch (additional charge).
Excursion around the Noravank Monastery territory. Founded in the 12th century on the site of ancient structures, the monastery features the only two-story church in Armenia, Surb Astvatsatsin, with narrow cantilever staircases, which can be a real challenge for some visitors.
Visit to Areni-1 Cave, a three-hall karst cave formed in the limestone formations of the Arpa River valley. Archaeological excavations carried out in 2007–2008 revealed cultural layers from the Stone and Copper Ages.
During these excavations, many unique artifacts were discovered, among them:
The oldest leather footwear ever discovered in the world, dating back 5,500 years.
The Vayots Dzor region is renowned for its unique microclimate ideal for grape cultivation. Some grape varieties grow only here and nowhere else in the world. Visit to a regional tasting center or winery, with a tasting of different local wines and grape varieties.
 Return to Yerevan.

Duration of the excursion: 7 - 8 hours
