Armenian lavash is more than just bread. It's a symbol of tradition, hospitality, and ancient craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation. Baked in a tonir clay oven, lavash is distinguished by its incredibly fine texture, elasticity, and unique flavor, unmistakable from anything else.

History and Symbolism of Lavash
Lavash is one of the oldest types of bread; traces of it have even been found in archaeological excavations. It was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2014, recognizing the importance of this bread in Armenian culture.

In Armenia, lavash is not only a food but also a part of rituals. At weddings, it is placed on the shoulders of the bride and groom as a sign of abundance. On the family table, it is always served alongside cheese, herbs, meat, and wine, symbolizing unity and comfort.

Baking is a true art.
Lavas are made using a minimum of ingredients: flour, water, salt, and sourdough. But the key is manual skill. The dough is rolled out until it's almost translucent, then deftly thrown into a hot oven, where it sticks to the wall and bakes for just a few minutes.

Traditionally, several women gather to bake lavash for the entire family—the process becomes a ritual of communication, song, and laughter.

Lavas in Modern Cuisine
Thin lavash is ideal for preparing dishes ranging from shashlik and khashlama to signature rolls with herbs and cheese. In Armenia, lavash is still stored dried and can be revived with steam before eating—a convenient and long-lasting option.
