Pulpulak is a traditional Armenian source of drinking water, found on city streets, in villages, near monasteries, and along roads. It has become more than just an architectural element, but a cultural symbol of Armenia: a sign of generosity, care for people, and respect for water—a sacred gift of nature.
What is a pulpulak?
A pulpulak is a stone fountain with a constantly flowing cold spring water. The water in pulpulaks is considered to be living and pure, often coming directly from mountain springs. Anyone can quench their thirst for free—it's part of an ancient tradition of helping travelers and showing hospitality.
History and Significance
• The first pulpulaks appeared in the Middle Ages.
• They were erected in memory of loved ones, as an act of blessing.
• It was believed that giving water was one of the most noble deeds, bringing light and goodness to the soul.
Pulpulak Today
• Dozens of pulpulaks have been installed in Yerevan and other cities.
• Many of them feature artistic designs, decorated with ornaments, crosses, and symbols of Artsakh and Armenian heritage.
• Pulpulak has become a distinctive calling card of the capital and an important part of the city's identity.
