 An Archaeological Trip to Ararat

 Armenian Archaeological Heritage is very rich with ancient discoveries, culture, material remains allover the country.  Many ruins and traces have been preserved for touristic visits. And still many are even remained untouched from ancient times.

Day 1: Arrival. A trip to Kotayk Marz with a visit to Garni Temple and, Geghard Monastery.

Garni is a pagan temple built in the 1st c. AC. Geghard Monastery (13c AC) is a unique architectural construction partially carved out of the adjacent mountain.

Day 2: Tour of Yerevan City that includes visit of History museum and Matenadaran depositary of rare manuscripts.

Day 3: Trip to Ashtarak town: Ashtarak (Tower) is a capital of Aragatsotn Marz, it’s spread out in and above the gorge of the Kasagh river and rich with old churches such as Karmravor, Tsiranavor, fortress Amberd, Aghtsk: King’s tomb.

Day 4: Trip to the ancient settlement Shamiram: stop at Aruch church which is situated on a rocky plateau at the western side of Mount Aragats, proceeding to Karavansaray Dashtadem and Mastara churches (5th c.). Overnight in Gyumri, Sirak Marz.

Day 5: Visit to Archealogical museum of Gyumri city, the second largest city in Armenia, walking tour by “old town” proceeding to the ancient settlement Baniamin: stop at Horom- Cyclopean castle. Overnight in Gyumri, Shirak Marz.

Day 6: Trip to Marmashen Monastery (10th c.), monastic complex consisting of five churches near the village of Marmarashen, Sirak Marz, proceeding to Lori fortress, visit to the Archeological museum in Vanadsor. Overnight in Vanadzor, Lori Marz.

Day 7: Trip to Sanahin (10-12th c), Haghpat (10-12th c.) monastery complexes, only 5 km distance from eachother, unique architectural constructions with their libraries, scriptoriums, schools and refectories. Final stop at Akhtala (12-13th c.) monument, an admirebale construction with frescos. Overnight in Dilijan, Tavush Marz.

Day 8: Dilijan city tour – spa city and the most flourishing site of Armenia. Trip to Haghartsin (10-12th c.), Goshavank (10-12thc.) and Sevan (9th c.) monasteries. Overnight in the emerald of Armenia Sevan, Gegharkunik Marz.

Day 9: Trip to the ancient settlement Lchashen, stop at Noradus, a medieval cemetery with a large number of early khachkars or as more used cross-stones field, proceeding to Eghegnadzor archealogical museum across Karavansaray Selim (14th c.). Overnight in Eghegnadsor, Vayots Dzor Marz.

Day 10: Trip to Zorats Karer – an archaeological site near Sisian city, Syunik Marz, magalithic monument, Ukhtasar (Camelrock) – rock images, an archealogical museum in Sisian. Overnight in Sisian, Syunik Marz.

Day 11: Trip to Tatev monastery, located on a large basalt plateau that dominates over Syunik from its height, proceeding to Overnight in Sisian, Syunik Marz.

Day 12: Trip to Areni caves, located in one of the oldest and outstanding settlements in Vayots Dzor, proceeding to Noravank monastery (11-13th c.) located in the canyon and rich with rare flora, stop at the ancient settlement Artashat and Khor Virap monastery, which located in the place of the citadel of historical capital Artashat. Drive back to Yerevan.

Day 13: Visit to Erebuni fortress-museum, that is housed in the ancient citadel of Erebuni, proceeding to the ancient settlement Shengavit.

Day 14: Trip to Echmiadzin, the spiritual centre of Armenian People, the seat of the Catholicos, proceeding to the ancient settlement Metsamor, an ancient fortress in Ararat Valley. Drive back to Yerevan.

Day 15: Check out. Transfer tot he International Airport “Zvartnots”. Departure.
